Realtime in Point0: channels, spaces and handlers, typed end to end

It usually goes like this. You have a fullstack project and everything in it is fine. Types run end to end (tRPC, or generated from OpenAPI), auth is there, the features work. Then you decide to add realtime: a notification about a new post in the feed, a chat between users, an interactive board. And a whole new layer of abstractions shows up, one where you reinvent everything the project already has, only differently. From then on you maintain two separate systems.

Point0 has four new realtime points (structural units, the same kind of thing as pages, layouts, queries and mutations): channel, space, client handler, server handler. Almost any realtime feature is built out of those four, the code stays short, and it reads the way it works. These points carry the same properties as every other point:

  • server and client code live in one file, and the compiler cuts the client code out of the server build and the server code out of the client build;
  • types run end to end, inferred from the framework's own generics, with no code generation.

Below I go through it on examples and explain the paradigm, so that you can build any realtime app on it.

I keep several agent sessions open at once: Claude Code in one window, Cursor in another, sometimes one more on a second machine. As long as they don't overlap, everything is fine. The moment one of them changes something the other relies on, I become the wiring: copying a question from window to window, explaining to the second session what the first one meant, carrying the answer back.

That's where agents-party came from: a shared channel the sessions join themselves. A skill file plus a CLI, MIT licensed. You say /party, it prints an invite for the other sessions as plain text. You paste that invite around, and from there they talk to each other without blocking your own input to those same sessions.

I want to compare the Point0 framework with the tRPC library. I am doing it because queries and mutations in Point0 feel a lot like tRPC, and are more convenient in the places where being a framework rather than a library actually buys something:

  • Declaring a query together with its server code right inside a client file, or the other way round
  • Hydrating and dehydrating the query client automatically once SSR is on
  • Sending files from mutations, turning the data into FormData and back on its own
  • Giving every query and mutation its own stable URL
  • Not making the editor crawl as the number of endpoints grows
  • Answering a request with whole server components or interactive islands
  • Controlling what loading states look like, on pages and inside components

Point0 does plenty beyond what this article covers, but that belongs in other articles. Here the focus is the comparison with tRPC. I assume you know tRPC at least roughly, but I still show the tRPC implementation of everything, so the comparison is visible rather than claimed.
